First Short Paper: Hurtado says in his book intimate Frontiers that â€Å"each newcomer transformed California the exotic into California the familiar, a long established pattern that yet continues† (133). I somewhat agree with Hurtado’s statement that everyone who migrated to California for whatever reason tried to convert California into a place that looks familiar, each and every person left their mark on California, and this is why California today is a blend of different cultures and different races. Even today we see a lot of immigrants try to fit in, in order to fit in they try to change things, make their temples, churches, mosques, they make their own community centers, they do this so that they don’t feel too alienated, they try to†¦show more content†¦Apart from changing the Indian way of living the exotic was turned into familiar by bringing white women into the state to replace the exotic women, men wanted to make families with women who were familiar to them. Hurtado says â€Å"Interracial sex was incidental to the California scene, yet it was shameful, something to hide.†(140). But no matter how hard the Americans tried to turn California into something familiar they could not take the exotic out of it, the exotic is still here. I think this is the beauty of California that it has the exotic and well as familiar in it. The recent immigrants from all over the world have tried to make it familiar too but have not tried to get rid of the exotic and that’s what is special about this place.
